Most call me Chrissy, short from my full name Christina Marie Schappell. I was born in Baltimore and raised thirty minutes away in Howard County. My life up until this point has consisted of ice hockey and school with a few confetti streamers adding a little spice and variety in the mix. Having had chances of playing D1 and D3 hockey, I decided to attend UMBC for academic reasons. My major is Biochemistry and having worked under Dr. Summers here for the past two summers largely influenced my decision. Something random about myself, I achieved the Girl Scout Gold Award with my project of bringing ice hockey to the underprivileged youth of Baltimore City. One of my favorite outings is going to Washington Capitals games with my boyfriend Zach who is also a goaltender in ice hockey. The rest of my journey awaits me.
A neighbor of mine is a statistician for the NHL @ the Verizon Center. I'm sure that he would give you & your boyfriend a tour of the press box area if you want. It's a completely different view from up there. Let me know if you're interested.
I used to live in Piney Orchard where the Capitols practised in the rink right behind my house. My friends and I would get to watch them practise because my uncle ran the zamboni at the rink.
I have never been a huge hockey fan, but I have always been interested in community service. I think that it is really cool that you were able to take your love for the sport and apply it to helping kids! True passion is always shared.
I used to watch Hockey in my hut in Guinea when there is no soccer on TV. I like it but never dreamed of playing it because I don't deal with ice. The best part for me is the fight...so barbarian but cool.
Your Girl Scout project sounds like a really cool idea. How did you go about making the project happen?
ReplyDeleteI also think that it is great how you chose UMBC for academic reasons, but still are involved with hockey outside of school.

ReplyDeleteBeing a hockey goalie is awesome. That takes alot of talent. It's definitely admirable to have chosen your academics over hockey.

ReplyDeleteHow long were you active in Girl Scouts? That is one of favorite memories from my past that totally fell by the wayside way too early in my life.
